Use Writing to Improve Your Health and Productivity

Stress and trauma come in all types of packages, including good ones. Consider the plight of a woman who bumped into an old college sweetheart, married him, and then experienced the agony of abuse so profound that it ended their relationship.

When it was all over, college lover boy plunged into a torrid affair and never looked back. Not so with the now-single woman. She felt like a disoriented failure. What went wrong? And now what? A journal and pen turned out to be her savior. As she struggled to put her life back together she wrote in her journal whenever she could.

She wrote:

To find out how her marriage had gone wrong.

To understand the person she had now become.

Most of all, to learn how to rebuild her life and jumpstart her career.

Later she told friends and family that these excursions into her journal had literally saved her life. Turning to a journal may have been the best thing she could have done: inexpensive, accessible, and rewarding.

Research involving controlled study groups now reveals that writing about past traumatic experiences can improve the health and well-being in many individuals.

We know more about the fact that writing about emotionally charged events works than we know about why it works. I put my money on two reasons why expressive and autobiographical writing works: disclosure and living the examined life.

There is no agony like bearing an untold story inside of you
-Trauma survivor, Maya Angelou

From the secret gospel of Saint Thomas we learn: "If you bring forth that which is within you, then that which is within you will be your salvation. If you do not bring forth that which is within you, then that which is within you will destroy you."

Socrates and other Greeks said, "Know thyself." Socrates also cautioned that the unexamined life is not worth living.

Show me a pen and paper (or a computer keyboard) and I'll show you how to use an expressive writing method to "know thyself" and to "bring forth that which is within you." I think that all writing is therapeutic. If nothing else, I usually feel better when completing dreaded writing chores such as writing checks to pay monthly bills.

Writing therapy using expressive, and focused autobiographical writing has been shown to improve numerous health conditions. This form of writing is easy to do, inexpensive, and requires no research other than self-exploration. This form of writing has helped many people who are recovering from traumatic events, enduring severe losses, and suffering from chronic diseases.

Three major reasons to use writing as therapy for those in the healing and helping professions include:

To discharge the "vicarious traumatization" that comes with the territory.

To help victims and survivors who are safe accept and deal with the aftermath of the violence and trauma they experienced.

To promote self-healing by writing personal stories or books and help others - a beneficial and therapeutic version of "bearing witness."

Start you own therapeutic writing practice today. Write for just 15 minutes about whatever bothers you or about any emotionally charged event in your life. It would be great to do this every day, but if time pressures prevail, write a minimum of three times a week for at least six weeks. At the end of six weeks, take stock of your progress.

The Survival of Computer Gaming

Our industry is dying. We all know that the so called "Next Generation" consoles are driving our beloved PCs out of the market. I could list the reasons why this is happening...I could even list the reasons why it should not be happening, but to those of you who are interested in reading this, I know that you're already intimately familiar with our predicament. It really has crept up on us. Honestly, there have been some great PC games released over the past couple years that have satisfied my gaming needs; but a few days ago, I had a rude awakening into this new world of "console only" games that has unleashed a beast inside of me. As a side note, I should say that I really don't have any problem with the Xbox360, the PS2, or the Wii other than the fact that they are killing the industry that I love...the industry that I grew up with. Anyways, back to my rude awakening. Many of you have heard about LucasArt's new title "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed" which will be released this fall. Many of you have also heard that it will not be released for the PC. Not now, not ever. Judging from the trailers and new technology that has gone into this game, it looks like it would be addictingly fun and could possibly even be my favorite of the year. However, according to the producers of the game, the PC market is not stable enough for this title. In other words, there aren't enough people out there with computers that would be able to handle the game. (Ironically enough, it is being released on the Nintendo DS and the Wii, neither of which are high performance gaming systems.)

What has happened? I've been playing Star Wars games on the PC for over ten years back when the X-Wing series and "Rogue Squadron" were just coming out. And now LucasArts won't even port their major release to the PC for their most loyal of fans? The situation is bad and on course to get much worse. After all, this is just one of the many games that have been excluded from the PC already. So is it time for PC gaming to become extinct? Should we give up our fully customizable gaming platforms and surrender to the standardized systems accepted by corporate stooges? I say NO!!!

But what will it take to survive in this industry. How can we regain our prowess in the world of video games. We have to be smart. We can no longer rely on our superior numbers to guarantee acknowledgment and preferential treatment in the biz, so we must rely on our superior brainpower to win this war (That's right console fans...I said it...we're smarter than you). We can no longer rely on unorganized petitions that half of us won't even see anyways. What Should We Do?!?!

We must get organized. We need to understand that we are an extremely marketable, niche group of people that should be catered to by game development companies. Lets face it, computer gamers are generally pretty nerdy...I'm guessing there's not one of us who couldn't set up a simple website if need be, not one of us who isn't doing some serious online surfing every day, not one of us who wouldn't love to work for Tom's Hardware full-time, and the list goes on. Yes, there are only a few hundred thousand of us, and compared to the millions of console gamers out there, it's pretty hard for us to get attention these days. But we are all interested in the same thing: Computer hardware and games, and as a unified community we could become very powerful again. Remember, 500,000 gamers times $40 equals $20million, plenty enough to make some pretty awesome games.

So here are some ideas for what the computer gaming industry needs:

  • A database of all the computer gamers in the world and the systems they have.
  • A well-maintained forum to discuss important events and plans.
  • Elected leaders to attack those who deny us.
  • A website devoted to keeping PC gamers informed on industry news.
  • Polls to decide which games we will support and which we will protest.
  • A group of ninjas to kill console gamers..............ok maybe not that one.....but maybe.

Make Money Online - Blogging

Blogs are the latest and greatest way to earn an income online. It's so great because of the flexibility of a blog, you can write about whatever it is you like and be able to monetize in some way that makes you money. This means that no matter what your hobby is, whether it be basketball, or knitting, you can make a blog about it and be able to make a decent income online from it.

When you make money blogging, the idea is get the attention of a certain audience, this will be your "target" audience. Once you decide who your "target" audience is going to be then you can move on to deciding how your going to monetize (make money) from your blog.

There are many ways a person can choose to make money online from a blog.

1. Affiliate Marketing - place affiliate links related to your topics, so when someone clicks on a link and ends up making a purchase, you get paid commission on that sale.

2. PPC Networks - Sign up to a PPC network like Google AdSense, or BidVertiser, and display relevant ads on your site. Every time someone clicks on an ad on your blog, you will get paid for the click, no purchase is required.

3. Sponsors - Another way to monetize your site is with sponsors, you can rent ad space on your site, and get paid under a monthly basis by your advertisers.

4. Consulting - If you're helping others out in your blog, then it's not unusual that someone may need more help then others. In many cases you will receive an e-mail from a readers willing to pay you for one on one consulting.

When it comes to making money online, nothing can beat it in my opinion. The benefits of being home, spending time with the family, and surpassing your current income are way too attractive and actually can be achieved by putting the same effort one puts into their regular job.

Not only is there the four way I mentioned above to make money from a blog, but there are several other ways, with new ways being thought up by bloggers everyday.
